JOINING MERCHANT NAVY AFTER 10th CLASS

In India, joining the merchant navy after completing 10th standard (secondary school) is possible, but it typically involves a longer route compared to joining after completing higher education. Here's a general guide on how to join the merchant navy after 10th in India:

1. **Complete 10th Standard**: Ensure you have completed your secondary school education with good grades, especially in subjects like mathematics, science, and English.

2. **Enroll in a Pre-Sea Training Course**: After 10th, you can enroll in a pre-sea training course at a maritime training institute or academy. These courses are specifically designed for candidates who wish to join the merchant navy. Look for institutes approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) in India.

3. **Pre-Sea Training Course Duration**: The pre-sea training course typically lasts for one to two years, depending on the program. During this training, you'll learn theoretical and practical aspects of maritime subjects such as navigation, seamanship, maritime law, firefighting, first aid, and more.

4. **Obtain Necessary Certifications**: Upon completing the pre-sea training course, you'll need to obtain certain certifications required to work in the merchant navy. These may include:

   - STCW Basic Safety Training: This includes courses in personal survival techniques, fire prevention and firefighting, elementary first aid, and personal safety and social responsibilities.

   - CDC (Continuous Discharge Certificate): Also known as a Seaman's Book, this document is issued by the DGS and is required for employment on Indian or foreign-flagged ships.

   - INDOS Number: The Indian National Database of Seafarers (INDOS) number is a unique identification number assigned to Indian seafarers. You'll need to register for this number through the DGS.

5. **Sea Service**: After obtaining necessary certifications, you'll typically need to complete a certain period of sea service as a trainee or cadet onboard a ship. This is usually done to gain practical experience and familiarize yourself with the workings of a ship.

6. **Career Progression**: With further sea service, additional training, and examinations, you can progress to higher ranks and positions within the merchant navy, such as officer positions (deck officer or engineering officer).

7. **Apply for Jobs**: Once you have gained sufficient experience and qualifications, you can start applying for jobs in the merchant navy. Look for opportunities with shipping companies, maritime agencies, or through online job portals specializing in maritime careers.

8. **Interview and Selection**: If your application is successful, you may be invited for an interview and selection process by the prospective employer.

It's essential to stay updated with the latest requirements and regulations set by the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) in India and follow their guidelines throughout your career in the merchant navy.
